I love the sounds of BFD. Truly top notch but I’m so glad I’m still on 3.4. whatever. I’m actually just petrified of upgrading and that I’ll never get it working again. If I feel this way then I’m SURE I’m not alone. I simply don’t have the time or energy to try and upgrade. In the end I believe this will end the viability of this software. In 2025 you just Can’t present this your best work as a company and survive. Toontrack doesn’t sound as raw or real but their products do sound great and the install/update process is as easy and reliable as it gets. Please, prove me wrong.
Seriously? Look, it’s a free upgrade, so try this plan: create a Windows restore point. Install BFD3.5. If you don’t like it you can always roll your machine back to the restore point. No harm no foul. Easy peasy.
I dreaded it too and put it off until I bought new expansions I couldn’t otherwise use. It turned out to go much smoother than expected. Details here if you’re interested.
Thanks for the comments. After reading through all the responses I think I’m doing the right thing by not upgrading. It’s sounds like people are having lots of issues and what REALLY seals the deal is that not one comment I read details all the new great features that makes it a must to upgrade ASAP. I’m running BFD 3.4 on a daily new M1 Mac with its latest operating version. BFD opens in just a a few seconds, doesn’t ever crash and I honestly don’t mind the quarterly checks for authorization as it takes less than 30 seconds. I also realize that I won’t be able to run my Mac in Native mode and will have to stick with Rosetta but I’ve got other software that is stopping me as well so it’s really no big deal. I will keep checking back but for now the downside just isn’t worth my time.
Cheers!
If you’re still considering ToonTrack SD3 I can highly recommend it. I used BFD since the very first version and invested in a huge library of expansions. Under the original ownership it developed fast and was well supported. Since the transfer it has stagnated, and development has slowed to a virtual standstill. The clunky and unreliable authorization is unacceptable in a professional setting. I have never regretted the switch.
