What’s with the ‘last week’s sushi’ prices on BFD and expansions? Prices that low make me nervous. Especially with Drew gone.
I think we have to assume that there will never be a BFD4 and BFD3 will not get any more updates/bugfixes. I mean, has there been any postings from official inMusic folks here on the forum in answer to any queries/points raised by forum members in the last few weeks/months? Is there anyone tasked with supporting BFD3 any more? Any development team?
That is disconcerting. I just bought Dark Farm and have been getting back into using BFD again. I went from an Intel Mac to Silicon recently and have been amazed at some of my other old VIs still working (BFD2 not being one of them). It’s a reminder to print things if you want to future proof your projects. Let us know if you hear anything.
Look, you can play that game and worry about what might be happening, or you can snap up some great content on the cheap and use it until you’re forced to switch to something else. Even if they shut down the project completely tomorrow, which is hard to believe given all the effort they poured into making a BFD 3.5, it’s still a great product with amazing capabilities. Use it for what it is today. If they push out new releases, then you win! And if they don’t, well, you still win for getting great content on the cheap you can keep using until they take the auth servers offline.
I did grab one of the last expansions I don’t have, plus two for Player. Just wondering if anyone knew something I didn’t.
I think I need to attenuate my pessimism a tad. I’ve just had a bit of an issue regarding my inMusic products including specifically BFD3 and so contacted inMusic support. I got a quick response from them and am very happy with their solution to my issues. So, not all doom and gloom.
It would be nice, if those softwares that require continual online authorization, would just release a patch to remove the need for that continued authorization, if they were going to shut down completely. I guess that’s too much to hope for in this dog-eat-dog world. I also just bought into BFD 3.5 (new user) and a number of expansion packs. I’ve hardly used it yet, as I also play other instruments, and drums are new to me. Sure hope it stays around for at least a year! Is there any way to export the samples?
No way to extract samples, they are in a proprietary format. Unlike you, I’ve had BFD for years, it really is great software, I have loads of expansions, many bought top dollar before the latest price slashing. So yes, the ‘until they take the servers offline’ really worries me too. Fingers crossed, that isn’t happening anytime soon.
What I haven’t seen with all this doom speculation is any evidence. I was a BFD3.5 beta tester and it seemed to me that people working for the company were quite responsive and sometimes incorporated upgrades that they would rather not have made, such as upgrading from VST2 to VST3. Like everyone else I have quite a few other drum VSTs, but it has gotten to the point that I pretty much just use BFD. The interface can be confusing but once you get used to it you realize how flexible and powerful it is.
You would think that the product would be at the point where it was fully developed and there was no other major enhancement possible. But I submitted a feature idea that they seemed very interested in that would be a total game changer and that no other drum program has. If a BFD4 only offered this one improvement that would be enough to justify going to BFD4. I don’t know if it will eventually make it into the product, but I certainly hope so. I’m not going to expound on it because there is no guarantee that my suggestion will ever be used. My point is, there are further enhancements that could be made and I don’t view the product as a dead end.
I started out as a beta tester with only the core library. Over time I have bought the following expansions: vintage recording techniques, black album drums, sabian digital vault, percussion, orchestral, modern retro, modern drummer snare selects, maple custom absolute, london sessions, imperial drums, horsepower, dark farm, cocktail, and 8 bit kit. I have to stop because I’m running out of hard drive space. They are all great, but if I had to pick a couple for sheer quality it would be sabian digital vault and modern drummer snare selects. The most surprising one (in a good way) is cocktail. Probably hardly anyone would agree with me, but for some reason it just speaks to me and I find it quite versatile. I like the craziness of 8 bit kit, but it is recorded way too hot. Figure on reducing the gain or faders on every piece right from the get go. I guess this was before they realized having some headroom is a good idea.
