I just released a music video that makes use of BFD3 drum sounds — using one of the stock kits which was then tweaked to suit the song/mix. I started off with one drum software then switched over to BFD3 for a more natural sound. I didn’t focus on getting “perfect” drums but rather ones that I could hear the parts being played and that was forceful enough to drive the song.
Sounds killer, Roland. Lots of great takeaways from this, both musically and the lyrical message. Is that BFD Crush, or a hybrid kit? The toms definitely sound like Crush. Only a suggestion, but I feel like the cymbals are just a touch too loud, but other than that it’s a great mix.
Thanks for the compliments. Re the cymbals, that’s an interesting topic. Just before I rendered the video file, I did a remix with the cymbals lowered in the overheads. I exported about six different stems, each time with the cymbals adjusted. The one I kept is the one where I thought the previous cymbal mix was too quiet to sound forceful.
A friend of mine mentioned that he’d gone back to listen to a number of songs by other artists and noted how low the cymbals were in the mix. Makes sense. They can be nasty.
I don’t have the crush set, btw. The kit isn’t open in front of me right now, but I suspect there are some pearl drums in there. But honestly, I had so much to focus on that those kinds of details got lost in the mix, so to speak. I’m just happy that the kit sounds pretty okay and that the music plays perfectly in sync with the animation and that I was able to put into words things that most people probably don’t even think about…like their inherent Bio-Psychology.
It’s a bit of a coup — putting out a music video featuring science, politics and issues of social equality that you can actually dance to.
Oh ok, my mistake. My first thought was Crush for the toms, but it’s probably something similar and how you eq’d them. I’d be interested in checking the kit out (assuming I have the kit pieces), if you don’t mind sharing your preset. Did you mix the drums in the DAW, or BFD3?
I’ve noticed that as well, how low-mixed cymbals tend to actually be, especially in more modern mixes. This is a more, lively sounding kit, so the louder OH’s do make sense.
Once again, really impressed mate. I don’t think I’ve heard any of your tracks before, so this was a surprise.
Fender_Bender, the drum sound and mix are just a combination of me pushing and turning things until I liked what I heard. I have it as a preset, but it won’t even help me to recreate it because of all the processing and panning I do inside the DAW. I just hope that I’m happy with the drums in the next song that I put out.
In that regard, this is the first song I’ve ever released. I sang and played all the tracks, mixed and mastered it, and did all the animation. It definitely took more than a weekend.
