Interesting collection of kick & snare samples…

Yeah, looks interesting. I’ve never heard of Yurt Rock before. Where did you come across them?

I’m going to listen to a bunch of the samples when I get a chance. I like roots and folk - was listening to a bunch of John Fahey today.
Even though I don’t often work with samples, that price is certainly attractive for a package that size.

Totally agree, it popped up in an Instagram feed, so I went and looked at their site, I don’t use samples either, but I decided to grab that at the 30% off price, massive collection, I couldn’t refuse.

Bought it last week. It’s an exceptional collection BUT … it’s not formatted for anything which means you’ve got your work cut out for you before you can start working with these.

The bassdrums, for example: there are 37 of them, each of them recorded with 4 microphones (three mono signals, one stereo room signal) and with five ‘round robins’ for each of the three captured articulations (‘Beater’, ‘Feathered’ and ‘Regular’).

In whichever sample playback software you want to import this lot, it’s going to take days to build consistent patches for all 37 bassdrums. And consistency is important of course, so that, when working on a track, you can switch from one bassdrum to the next until you find the one that best fits the music. And you also have to find a way to program each bassdrum in such a way that it becomes reasonably straightforward to balance the 4 microphones to your liking.

And that’s just the bassdrums. The snares require four of five times the amount of the work the bassdrums need, because there are 57 of them, each of them captured from 6 mic perspectives and each having 5 articulations: ‘Center’, ‘Ghost’, ‘Rim Shot’, ‘Sidestick’ and ‘Snares Off’.

This would make a great expansion pack for BFD3 though. Provided the sounds can be licensed and the BFD team have someone among them who’s willing (and has the time) to do all the tedious work.

Some interesting things happening in drumland!

I was going to take a stab at doing the bass drums in a HALion library. I’ll post when I’m finished. Then anyone who bought the samples could download the free HALion Sonic player and use it.

That’s a big “IF” but I’m going to give it a try. Don’t hold your breath!
