Does anybody know how to assign several articulations on a single midi note? My plan is to have each one triggered by a different velocity range. page 142 in the manual says that it is possible, but fails to explain how. At least I can’t find it.
You can Command/Alt-Click to highlight multiple articulations from the list on the right. Then press, Assign to key. It will display “multiple” on the piano roll for that key.
Thanks for the reply! I thought I tried that, but it was close to 2 in the morning, so maybe not. But I am filled with hope and anticipation! Thanks again.
Hey Fender!
That worked great. But do you have any ideas how to assign each articulation to a certain velocity range? I wasn’t able to figure that out easily and thought you might know.

Check the BFD3.5 Reference manual…pg 117 through..pg 120 for Stacking/Velocity Splits.
I can’t believe I’ve slept on this feature for so long. Even as a manual programmer, I can totally see the benefit of setting this up to get more expressiveness out of a kit piece. There are so many expansions with multiple Ride bells and bows, alt-hits for shells, etc. This would allow you to maintain a much cleaner MIDI editor, whilst taking advantage of the extra articulations.
But this seems like it will be pretty tedious to setup for a whole kit to determine where all the crossover points should realistically be. Down the rabbit hole I go.
Thanks chaser and fender. That was helpful and I have been able to successfully assign various velocity ranges to different articulations. I found that it was a lot easier by clicking the “follow midi” button since that gives a great visual feedback as to what is going on and which articulations are in play.

lol..it is Tedious at first while figuring out the desired sound you want to accomplish.
However as with everything else..the more you do it..the faster you get…the easier it gets.
I use the Stacking/Velocity Splits for setting up kits for E-Drums (especially live performers).
It is actually a Feature in the New Alesis STRATA Modules…along with the Alesis STRIKE Modules (Discontinued) where you can load your own samples and create Instruments with in a Kit Piece such as Bass,Guitar,Synth,FX, etc on specific Velocity Hits.ie “Velocity Switching”
This also allows you to "Split’ the triggers on Modules and expand the Trigger Count as you can put a Rim Click or a Side Stick on Low velocity and a Rim Shot on Highest Velocity..a Gong on a cymbal etc.. and adjust the Volume/Trim for the Lower Velocity Hits.
You can watch the MIDI…I have setup user Kit Piece with Voice Count Samples..like 1-8..then the drummer can use to listen to their playing style (everyone plays different) and hear the velocity range change by the count and know where to insert and adjust the velocity range for a different Kit articulation.
There still isn’t an E-Drum section in the BFD Forum to Support the Drum Module that is running BFD Software or any of the lower level Kits that are programmed with BFD Samples.
