Couldnt help but notice that the Pork Pie Black Sparkle Kick sounds very off center in the Room ambient mix. Is this just a normal characteristic of some of the recordings?
Yeah, this does occur with a few expansions and various kit pieces from what I remember. Apparently it is normal. There may be other posts about it if you do a search.
Thanks! Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t only something on my end. Do you have any favorite kicks that are more centered?
From the core library? I honestly don’t use those kits all that much. I have used the Mapleworks on a few projects. It’s a pretty big/subby kick and loose, but you can tighten it up with the dampening and even a transient designer, or the envelope shaper tools. I thought the DW Mardis Gras was decent for that tight and clear sound for the heavier stuff. I think the Gretsch Purple is another one that I liked.
As for expansion kicks… Dark Farm Mahogany, Horsepower, Oblivion, VRT, Modern Retro Tama, Crush. Sphere has some nice shells, but I think that’s another one where either the kick, or snare isn’t centered in the ambient mics… I forget if it’s both kits, or not. I think I made a post about it.
That isn’t going to bother me though because I will generally high pass the low end on rooms and OHs up to 80Hz, so it’s not going to be boomier on one side and I don’t push up the room mics too much either. In a full mix with the bass and guitars, you’re not going to notice any slight unevenness with the low end.
