No Cymbal Chokes in BFD through any DAW!

BFD 3.5, Roland TD-50x, Windows 11 and Cubase, Studio One, Digital Performer, Ableton Live, Cakewalk Sonar, Bitwig, Mixbus, Luna and FL Studio.

Cymbal chokes work in BFD standalone, but not through any DAW.

Tried every setting I can imagine, in both BFD and DAWs, but nothing.

Any Ideas? Did not find a solution in the BFD manual, or with BFD support.

Superior Drummer, Addicted Drums and EZdrummer all choke within DAW, but not BFD.

What the hell am I missing?

Thanks in advance

Have you assigned them on the keymap page?

Steve

Yes, but it didn’t seem to work. I must be missing something. I’ll give it another go later tonight. Thanks!

It’s not about assigning choke in the key map page, as this is just another midi note number. I.e., another key on a keyboard, pad controller, or zone on a e-kit cymbal. It’s about aftertouch. On the key map page under “tools,” there’s a selection for “choke on aftertouch.” Works perfectly in the standalone, but not in the plugin. I tried it in a few different DAWs and it’s just not working. I’ll assume it’s a bug.

Same challenge here. New to BFD here (plenty of MIDI drum background including SSD for years) but haven’t dug in to figure it out yet. Triggering from a Simmons SD1250 kit which supports full choke on all cymbals. I can see the midi note trigger in BFD in the log (paraphrasing from memory but it may have been a note 000 or something) when I grab the cymbal edge. Hoping someone can crack the code and I’ll keep trying as well. Thanks!
Using Reaper.

Have you adjusted the choke ‘Base’ and ‘Range’ values, and checked that the power is on to that section?
Right there with the choke group selection.
I had to do this the other day for a sound, forget what changes I had to make, but it wasn’t working as the sound was basically played out by the time the choke would start, this changed as I adjusted the values.

Not having any trouble producing cymbal chokes in BFD standalone (3.5) - they work. The problem is that they are not (the aftertouch CC data) recorded in the groove editor. Also, when BFD is used as a plugin in a DAW, chokes, by way of aftertouch, are again not being recorded, but aftertouch is being received. It’s gotta be a bug in BFD 3.5.

It’s gotta be a bug in BFD 3.5!

Ah, I understand. Sounds like a bug.
It’s unfortunate but bugs have always been slow to be fixed with fxpansion previously and it seems to be similar with BFD. Usually after a major update like 3.5 there are some fixes released not too long afterwards, we haven’t seen anything yet. I assume you’ve reported it officially through inMusic?

if the Module sends a MIDI Note instead of After touch you can assign or MIDI Learn it to the Choke..

Great info everyone, appreciate the guidance. I’ll give it some deeper dive this evening and report back. Thanks!

It’s clearly a bug in the BFD VST3 plugin and BFD Standalone 3.5! Got the plugin to work with Cubase 14 and SD One 7 with “VST2.” Also in Pro Tools with AAX plugin format. Again, I’m on Windows 11, so no AU.

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately due to time constraints I have to abandon BFD 3.5 for the moment. Too buggy from a latency perspective and a lot to digest from the learning curve side.
