When things go wrong in 3.5 I spend days trying to figure out how to fix it, and I have been here since the first BFD.
Two days ago I lost all my drum kit presets. I’ve moved the presets around to many directories with no luck. This just happened out of the blue. Nothing changed. Once person’s fix for this was to go to File - Load preset from file. I did that: C:\Users\m\OneDrive\Documents\BFD Drums\BFD3\Presets. This is not where I would like them to be, but they are there anyway and they still don’t play. Instead of a kit picture I get a white BFD 3 folder icon. When I click on this icon I get this message: Failed to load infor! (3). I’ve put these presets everywhere I can think of with luck. I have more than 30 presets but only 3 work. I was in the middle of a song when this happened and I just can’t understand why. Please help.
I miss the previous way to change content locations. I don’t understand this way.
Also, some of the presets now say they are in this directory: Onedrive/personal/documents. They are not in there. How did these presets change? I have no idea why they would be directed to that location.
I think I fixed it. I added a directory and now I only have to delete the Kit Presets with the white BFD 3 folder icon. Still don’t know how this happened.
One possible explanation for your consideration. If you recently did anything that caused Microsoft Windows to convert your account from a local account to a cloud account, it would move things around under the hood on you. And it can have very disruptive effects much like what you just described.
Well, that is interesting. I don’t recall doing anything with the frequent Windows updates, except crossing my fingers and hoping the whole thing doesn’t crash. Yet, somehow this just might be what caused this issue. Thank you.
You’re welcome. I’ve been hit by that more than once myself. If you look in the C:\Users folder and see more than one variant of your typical user name, that’s a strong sign Windows switched you over.
. . . and this is exactly why I’m on Windows 10 and don’t have anything in the cloud. A friend of mine had a thriving internet consulting business and maybe a dozen employees. He often called me a Luddite. Then he completely lost everything pertaining to his business that was in the cloud, which was pretty much everything. He was out of business within a year.

Microsoft is constantly trying to trick people into “backing up” and when the user inadvertently clicks “OK” the Documents, Downloads, and Pictures folders are moved into the OneDrive folder, and all the links point there. One of the aims is to fill up that “free” 5gb space, so you have to buy more, at a monthly rate.
But what’s worse, is that the default for storage in OneDrive is to move the data into the cloud and only keep “links” to the files on the local computer. Of course, this will break apps that are looking for the physical file. You can change this behavior in OneDrive, but it’s safer just to store locally, and then use OneDrive as a backup location, syncing whatever folders you choose into OneDrive, so you always have a local copy. I use FreeFileSync to accomplish that.
It’s not a bad idea to use the cloud for backups, since if your house ever burns down, or your laptop gets stolen, you have all your files still in the cloud to retrieve from there. However, I never store my originals in a cloud folder, only my backups.
