Kits don’t really mean too much to me, what’s more important is the recording philosophy. In all my years doing this work I found that BFD samples are the most organic for my tastes, and the closest to what I track when I’m doing a studio session.
Everyone has their own tastes and BFD has been very suited to mine.
Having said that I do use and mix Toontrack and AD and whatever other samples I’m sent regularly and they also sound great, just not what I personally want if given the choice. Hard to find bad sounding drum samples, the only ones I didn’t care for where the first EZdrummer sounds, and especially when they re-released the original drumkit from hell for it, botched that one.
To this day I still use old Sonic Implants soundfonts and gigasamples from the 90s cuz they were just recorded really well and still stand up just fine.
Drew said they were working on a fix in 2021. I just make sure I open it every couple of weeks now. But when you haven’t because life interferes and you can’t use it because the licence server is down or whatever it’s painful.
It’s a real shame where BFD has ended up. It’s 11 years old, it works but its just not kept up with the times. Support is left to people like you Steve. I’ve had questions that just go unanswered for weeks. Maybe because I’ve bitched about it and therefore the people who are loyal to it just don’t want to help. I don’t know. It doesn’t matter. There are bugs that just don’t get fixed as far as I am aware.
Yesterday it all became too painful and I bought a black Friday special copy of EZDrummer 3. I had some questions that were answered by multiple people within an hour. It’s a different workflow but I’ll get used to it. The sounds are great for what I do so I’ll use it instead now.
I feel sorry for the staff like Drew who are doing the best they can with what appears to be very little help or resources.
