Did I just lose BFD 3?

Hi,

it’s been a while, though I haven’t counted the years! I recently wanted to get back to my BFD 3 stuff, which has waited patiently for much too long on my harddrive. By opening the BFD-license manager, I get the following error message:

Any ideas? I cannot use any plugin instance of bfd because of this error, and it drives me nuts!

Cheers

It has been a while … In that time BFD was purchased by InMusic. The BFD license manager is no longer in use, replaced by the InMusic Software Center.

And a new version of BFD3, 3.5, was issued. It is generally recommended when updating to 3.5 to also re-download the libraries/expansions.

Probably just their servers. Log out of the license manager, close, reopen and sign in again. The last time this happened to me (recently), I had to do this several times. Even had to reboot the computer. I’m on an older version like you. Be aware the this version of the LM will no longer download anything, only register and authorize.

If you haven’t resolved this already, you could try logging out by clicking on ‘user’ at the top, and log out.

Then close the licence manager.

When you reopen it, it will open up your browser where you can log in again and then re-licence BFD3 and any expansion packs you may have.

Thanks for all your replies.

I was ill for a few days, but now I’m back on my feet, ready to tackle this one.

So, during my last break, BFD went to inMusic. This much I do know. And this is when I had the pleasure to move everything from my old account over to them, and got me the DownloadManager. (Was it really inMusic at that time? I am not so sure anymore…)

OK, now, things have obviously changed. Again. Well, I am not trying to complain, things move on, and at the end of the day I am just an old guy (got BFD version 2.0 on discs - yes, I am that old) who would like to have easy access on his big fluffing drums.

So, I hear you, and here is what (I think) I’ve learned today:

a) LicenseManager is no longer in use - so it would be easiest (?) to go along with the Software Center? Anything I should know about that before giving it a shot? My libraries are on another drive (where all my vst and stuff reside), so maybe authorizing via SC should be enough?

b) LicenseManager still does kinda work, letting me re-authorize all my libraries and BFD. But if I would like to keep up with the new stuff (maybe upgrade to 3.5), then there is no way around Software Center? Am I correct so far?

Thanks in advance - I’ll get to the studio later today; ‘cross my fingers, and maybe I should plan on making some cups of tea more

You are definitely going to want to get familiar with InMusic manager. Hopefully everything you own appears there and you are recognized as an authorized user. If not, contact tech support, which you can do through the new InMusic interface, if I remember correctly. I have been using BFD since version 1, which was long ago. All upgrading went easily for me.

You should definitely do the free upgrade to 3.5, in my opinion. I was a beta tester for it, and in my experience it is quite robust, although it probably helps to not have a bunch of unnecessary background processes running on your computer that may conflict. Just a note: if you download 3.5, you also will have to download all your expansion packs and the core library again to have it work correctly. Some of these packs are quite large and may take a long time, especially Dark Farm. For some unexplained reason, my favorite pack is Cocktail, which is one of the smallest and few people use it. But there are lots of great packs. I like them all.

If/when you jump to BFD3.5, keep your BFD3.4 insall file in case you need t go back.

BFD3.5 is broken for me. The auto generated kit names in the piano roll stopped working.
It actually stopped when they brought out BFD Player, but since it was nver going to replace BFD3, I wasn’t so bothered.

The bug isnt’t just in bandlab or sonar, from what I understand, it’s in Ableton, FL Studio and Studio 1 and maybe a few others.

I reported the bug over a year ago now and there hasn’t been a single update in that time.
It’s still under review, whatever that means.

There hasn’t been any update whatsoever to the BFD3 software since November 2024 - not a positive sign.

That being said, the kit names do show up for me in Cubase. Do you have the new library downloads that were issued for all libraries late fall 2024? There were apparently a bunch of bug fixes included in the updated libraries.
