BFD 3.5 preset / kit change questions

Hi All.

i currently run old version of BFD (BFD2). The BFD 3.5 intro offer looks very tempting indeed, but i have couple of questions - does the new VST3 version come with vst3 preset files ready made? - so it will show in Nuendo Media bay, and allow me to configre a next and previous preset button on my midi controller and scroll through every preset / kit there is? (i have a midi controller next to my DM10 kit, and would love to be able to step through all kits / presets while sat at my drums, as though i was using the drum module for sound) or is this taken care by midi learn in BFD 3.5 itself without need to use Nunedo funtionality? - can i learn next and previous preset or next / previous kit using some cc or note message?

Thanks!

It doesn’t. I don’t think anyone does this any more outside of Steinberg.*

However:

You can use the instrument’s RCE in Cubase, or even better, use BFD’s Automation panel to set up whatever you want. It’s really flexible and thorough.

*It wouldn’t make much sense either, because BFD3 presets are a plethora of stuff that you choose to load at once or not.

Example:

I have a preset: My Drums

When called, this preset will load [1] a kit (this snare, this kick, this high tom etc), [2] a mix (all mixer settings I have made, effects and all), [3] a groove (it plays a certain rhythm), [4] a key map (assignment of MIDI notes to BFD’s kit piece articulations), [5] an automation map (assignment of BFD parameters to MIDI messages, for example tuning of kick on CC34, volume of snare on CC45, or whatever we have set up), and [6] Global BFD Settings.

All these can be included or not when loading a preset. I can load My Drums preset with just the mix button pressed, and what will happen is that only the mixer will change. I can load just the kit. Or the kit and the groove. I think you get it. So, it wouldn’t make much sense to call presets from outside when you need to have that kind of granularity.

i read up in automation, it goes some way to what i want, but there is a limit to PC messgaes. my hope is to have two ways to move - 1 using automation to go though (or jump to specific) kits in a shorter ‘polished’ list of kits i built around my e-drums,although i didnt see how i could jump between diff playlists with Midi msg, for example a play list for electoinic (8bit kit for example) and pure acoutic kit playlist. this would be used most, but i would like 2 use Nuendo funtionality to be able to scroll through everything without needed to get up from my edrums. not sure what ‘instruments RCE’ is. will do some searching…

update
i checked RCE. i think this is the same as ‘Midi Remote’ i have this with templates built for all my controllers already. they work well, but can be hit and miss with non stienberg VST. the VST must have / allow midi mapping for next / previous preset / bank, or resond to prog / bank change messages in the first instance for you to be able to assign it to your controller, not all VST have this

anyhow - think i am going to make the jump to 3.5 while the offer is on regardles!

Thanks!

RCE has to do with the layout and the order in which the parameters are presented to Cubendo from the plug-in. But BFD’s automation page allows you to set up specific assignments for each preset if needed, it offers enormous added flexibility.

I’m not saying you won’t need to scratch your head a bit until you decide on what’s the best way to do it (remote control everything from afar). You will. I just want to assure you that the infrastructure is definitely there. Between BFD, Cubendo’s RCE AND the MIDI Remote, there are very few limits to what you can do.

Thanks for the advise, yes some head scratiching is already going on!
