Recording from multiple outs into DP

This is what my Overheads, Room and Ambience mics routing looks like in BFD. Even though AmbMix is routed to Master, I’m not actually routing Master into DP. Only BFDs stereo 2 and 3 and mono 1-16. Note: I like a mono room mic, so, I route it to Mono 1, but, if you like stereo, you could route it to Stereo 4 instead.

(My obsessive nature would probably have me have room on Stereo 3 and PZMs on Stereo 4)

I’m not certain that BFD actually uses PZMs for their ambience mics. The photo sure isn’t a PZM. Ambience has always meant PZMs to me, so, that might just be in my notes to myself.

While I have this set up this way, most of the time, I like to only use overheads, room, hat, Snare 1 Top, Kick 1 Out. That’s generally how I record a drum kit.

Oh and you don’t have to set it up the way I do. You can put any mono source on any mono channel and any stereo source on any stereo channel. The important part is how it corresponds to DP (or your other DAWs which is probably different for each DAW).

DP BFD
3+4 Stereo 2
5+6 Stereo 3
7+8 Stereo 4
9+10 Stereo 5
11+12 Stereo 6
13+14 Stereo 7
15+16 Stereo 8
17 Mono 1
19 Mono 2
21 Mono 3
23 Mono 4
25 Mono 5
27 Mono 6
29 Mono 7
31 Mono 8
33 Mono 9
35 Mono 10
37 Mono 11
39 Mono 12
41 Mono 13
43 Mono 14
45 Mono 15
47 Mono 16

So where do these channels end up going in terms of routing and signal path?

I just edited my last post that I think answers that question.

Do you use these in you signal path?

It looks like you changed the names of them, but, left them all in the AmbMix routing.

I don’t know what the Comp 1 and Comp 2 mics are, but, your Mono 1 appears to be the OH (Overhead), Mono 2 appears to be Room and Mono 3 appears to be Amb3. At the bottom is where you change the routing. Where it says AmbMix.

I didn’t change anything. this is how they appear in my BFD3

I actually use to do direct routing to dp from BFD all the time. It has been awhile and I am confused with what category some of these mics fall in.

My BFD has never defaulted to that. I wonder if it’s patch specific. What Preset are you using?

I renamed it but I think it was called back to the seventies?

I guess in this case I would route the duplicates out the same output? both overhead and mono 1 out 2?

I just pulled up each of the Back To The Seventies and they’re all zeroed out. I don’t do any mixing or routing within BFD, so, I don’t know if the mix section just stays as is regardless of Preset. Mine stays the same regardless of preset. I also don’t really use the standalone app, so, this appears to be the default for the mix section

Sorry this is the preset and these channels only appear when I collapse the ambient rail.

I was incorrect. It does look like there are different mix settings. I just pulled up some of the 8 bit Kit presets and they are wildly different.

I’m seeing what you’re seeing now on 70s Rock 1 110bpm. You wouldn’t necessarily need to use all of eight AmbMix mics that they are using. You could route all of them if you wanted to, but, you might just want to route the OH, Room and Amb3 mics.

I guess I could route the duplicates out the same channel?

For anyone else reading that wants to see. 70s Rock 1 110bpm’s AmbMix looks like this:

Or, you could potentially route OH to Stereo 2, Mono 1 to Mono 1, Mono 2 to Mono 2, Comp 1 to Mono 3, Comp 2 to Mono 4, Room to Stereo 3, Amb3 to Stereo 4, but, you would have to reroute every time you pick a new preset. All of those extra mics aren’t really necessary.

If you did want to use them, you might leave everything but OH, Room and Amb3 routed to AmbMix and then route AmbMix to Stereo 5.

Thanks for the feedback it helps to hear another persons take on it. Appreciate it.
