Well, if you’ve dropped it but are still here on the forums perhaps it’s not so “aggro” after all
J/K
Anyway…Like I said, I didn’t want to sell the software. And the transfer process ended up taking so long that by the end I didn’t even need to sell it (But I had to go through with it, for the sake of the ever-patient buyer). Until that point, I saw how Drew was handling himself through all the troubles, and firmly believed (still do) that he’s in this for the long-haul.
But yeah, perhaps I need to stop at this point…just in case.
Either way, I’d stil appreciate if anyone could give me an idea about my original question regarding the expansions. Whether I buy now or hold on, I’d still be interested to know.
@el-bo There is currently a BFD3 M1 build that’s in beta, but BFD4 will not happen until early 2024. There is a BFD “Player” that’s in the works and slated for early 2023, but I’ve gathered it’s going to be a very slimmed down version of BFD with not a lot of tweaking or mixing capability. No one knows what kind of compatibility it will have with existing expansions.
So it seems you’re already familiar with the core library and know that what you’re looking for isn’t there. I find the core library to be very versatile myself and high quality.
Just to further elaborate on the BFD sales… Since Jan/Feb of this past year, there were BFD expansion sales every week and for many consecutive months. There was a pretty decent rotation of different expansions on sale, including Sabian DV which was on sale frequently, along with some of the snare expansions. So that may hold true again. I myself don’t have those 3 expansions you mentioned, so I can’t comment on the overlap.
Don’t have J&F, but the Sabian expansion is very nice, and the Modern Drummer Snares are fantastic. Good selection of wood and metal snares with a variety of articulations and all well recorded. MDSS is a steal at the current price (they’re even cheaper over at pluginboutique).
Hi FB
Have you seen the Jazz & Funk expansion anywhere other than the BFD Drums site? It’s not on PB, JRR or Don’t Crack. That’s a pretty old expansion that they’ve resurrected from BFD1 days, right?
I’m actually in no hurry for BFD4. A stable M1-compliant V3 is fine enough for me, for while.
So, I’m guessing the M1 version won’t take too much longer to drop?
I originally bought BFD3 second-hand, bundled with the London (BFD2) stuff, the 2 Sleishman libraries and some other kit (Oak, perhaps). There was just so much stuff to wade through, and I ended not feeling enthused about any of it. I should’ve just installed the base V3, then added other bits later.
I then bought the J & F expansion, and sometime later got ‘Jazz Noir’ as a free gift during the takeover. But by that point I was having so many computer (and other) issues that music had to stop. So I can’t even really recall so much about J & F.
So, all in all, I feel like I’m no further ahead than if this was my first time with the libraries.
Good to get an idea about the sales frequencies, though.
The MDSS does indeed sound fantastic, which led me to consider the Sabian pack to try and level-up the HH and cymbals
I buy from Audiodeluxe, as they offer Deluxe ‘bucks’ or whatever they’re called. With each purchase, money against future purchases is accrued. So rather than buying all at once, staggering the purchases allows the discounts to be used on each subsequent expansion. It helps to sweeten the already sweet prices they’re offering.
No, I don’t think I’ve seen it in 3rd party retailers either. Kabuki is another tough one to find sometimes. The original boxed version of J&F worked with BFD1.5, but the current downloadable-only version doesn’t. I wish they could resurrect and re-package some of the other older expansions for the nostalgia.
If you are referring to JRR Shop…they have 10+ copies of the “Boxed Version” on Reverb.
There are a couple other Music Stores also…
The older expansions used wav files…
The Boxed sets were expensive for Music Shops compared to digital downloads.
I still have all mine but CD’s and DVD’s don’t last forever…and not many computers have CD/DVD Drives these days.
Expansions originally were wav.(BFD1-2)…then later compressed…bfdca (BFD3 Fxpansion era)…bfdlac (BFD3 inMusic)…There was also a converter in the early days (2006) that converted Toontrack to BFD format/use…
They last quite a long time if you take care of them, and I build my own computers so I still have an optical drive in mine. But yeah, I do most of my SW acquisition by download these days. Although, I did pick up BFD Deluxe on physical media from eBay last year when I discovered it had been discontinued and I had put off purchasing it for a long while since it was fairly pricey. Got a good deal on it in the end.
Cheers
The sale is still on at bfddrums.com too I just grabbed the J&F too, can’t help it for that price, if you don’t have any of the snares and all that type of stuff yet, I’d go for it at those prices, well worth it.
Yeah, I took the plunge too. Too many goodies in that package. InMusic really needs to fix the product descriptions so you can see exactly what’s included with each expansion. I tracked down a pretty good description at Sweetwater for Jazz & Funk.
Four different kits and a vast array of cymbals
BFD Jazz & Funk Collection is centered around four beautiful kits - a Slingerland, a Yamaha and two Gretsch kits. Several high-resolution hi-hats with closed, 1/4-open, 1/2-open, 3/4-open and fully open positions are included, along with a vast array of Sabian, Wuhan and Zildjian cymbals. Finally, a variety of additional kicks and snares further expand your musical possibilities: vintage classics such as a Ludwig Super Sensitive snare, a 1970s Slingerland 32" kick and a restored 1940s Leedy 26" kick are just a few highlights of the drums at your disposal.
FXpansion BFD Jazz & Funk Features:
Complete kits by Gretsch, Yamaha and Slingerland
1973 Ludwig Super Sensitive snare
Rogers 1960s Powertone and 1950s Luxor snares
Pearl Free Floating snare
1970s 32" Slingerland kick
Gregg McDonald 6x14" snare
Comprehensive cymbal selection
Brushed drums, cymbals and hihats
Selected instruments played with mallets, rods and hands
Thanks for that, I was trying to find something like that earlier as I have so many expansions, sometimes it’s not worth me buying as they have the same kit pieces, would be a waste. This one looks good though
