Anybody using this combo? I’m running an M1 MBP and macOS Sequoia 15.7.7. Any issues that I need to be aware of? I haven’t been using BFD for a while but would like to try it now.

Well here we go. No love.

When I tried to load a drum kit in the BFD3 plugin inside Logic I got an error message in BFD:

“BFD3 has been disabled because:
You are not logged into your inMusic account.
Please run the BFD License Manager.”

Fair enough. I then clicked on the link to launch License Manager and got this message:

“There was an issue retrieving your list of products
Our server was unable to process the request. Please try again shortly. Server message: The request could not be authorized.”

Lovely. So I continued doing some housekeeping in Logic which included assigning BFD3 as the instrument in my MIDI drum tracks. After a couple of times seeing BFD launch with its error message to run License Manager I suddenly got this error message in Logic:

“An Audio Unit plug-in reported a problem which might cause the system to become unstable.
Please quit and restart Logic Pro.”

Now I remember why I haven’t used BFD in a while. I’m using BFD License Manager 3.0.6.22.

Any BFD version prior to 3.5 is prone to cause the _“An Audio Unit plug-in …”_-error. Not every time, but very often. The problem can be easily (and 100% reliably) circumvented however by loading BFD 3.4.x in a hosting plug-in like DDMF’s Metaplugin.

This is how I work and I haven’t had any problems since: I’ve saved a ChannelStrip that loads a multi-out instance of Metaplugin which, in turn, has BFD 3.4.5 loaded. So simply selecting that ChannelStrip (which I named ‘BFD Meta’) gives me, almost instantly, a multi-out version of BFD, all set-up with my custom starter kit preset and ready for multi-out use.

Getting Metaplugin means another investment — €71,3 regular price, though I bought it for much less quite a few years ago, during some sale or other —, but there might be cheaper or even free alternatives which work just as well for this one purpose. I haven’t looked into that.

(I’m working on a M1 Ultra, running Sequoia 15.2 and my version of Logic is 11.2.2. )

I use Metaplugin for some plugins as well. Do you know if 16 outputs is the maximum? I was thinking to add a second output module and connect them, but it doesn’t work by giving you 32 outs.

16 outputs is the maximum for the Instrument version of Metaplugin, yes. (The Effect version has a maximum of 8.)

Thanks @basrikke and @Fender_Bender for the info about Metaplugin. I seem to have come across that somewhere.

I have since upgraded to BFD 3.5. Seems to work ok in standalone but I haven’t had a chance to try it as a plugin in either Logic Pro or Reaper, which I have been giving a try. Been busy composing and working with synths.

So far Reaper looks like it might be good to use when Logic falls short. Maybe Reaper could end up being the go-to DAW. Lot’s of flexibility and I like it’s workflow better than Logic is some regards. I went from Pro Tools to Logic about 10 years ago when I got tired of playing Pro Tools hardware upgrade games, and computers became powerful enough to not need Pro Tools DSP. Logic’s UI can be overwhelming when you don’t need everything it crams into the UI. Reaper can go either way.
